How to help your people be AI confident

How does your team really feel about using AI in their day-to-day work?

Excited?
Nervous?
Probably a bit of both.

AI is now firmly part of the modern workplace. In fact, a recent study shows that four in five workers use some form of AI tool as part of their role, with more than half regularly using AI assistants to save time.

But widespread use doesn’t always mean widespread confidence.

AI in the workplace

Many employees still feel unsure about how their use of AI will be perceived. Some worry they’ll be seen as lazy or cutting corners. Others feel judged or questioned by colleagues when they rely on AI tools to help them work more efficiently.

It creates an odd contradiction: people trust AI to support their work, but they don’t always trust how others will react to them using it.

The reality is, AI is here to support people – not replace them. When used properly, it becomes a partner that helps employees spend more time on strategic thinking, creativity, and problem-solving, instead of repetitive admin.

However, for this to work, people need confidence. And that’s where many businesses are still catching up.

AI training uptake

Only around one in three workers have received any formal training on using AI tools. Most are learning through trial and error, which can lead to uncertainty, inconsistent results, and a lack of trust in the technology.

Confidence also varies by seniority. Around 70% of managers say they feel comfortable using AI, but that drops to roughly a third among junior team members.

So how can businesses close that gap?

It starts with culture

Leaders need to create an environment where experimenting with AI is encouraged, not quietly judged. Using AI shouldn’t feel like cheating – it should be seen as smart, efficient working.

Give your team opportunities to learn in ways that suit your business. That might include formal training sessions, internal workshops, or simple “show and tell” meetings where people share how they’re using AI to save time or improve their work.

AI confidence doesn’t happen overnight. But when people feel supported, trusted, and empowered to explore new tools, they’re far more likely to embrace them. That’s when businesses start to see the real benefits: improved efficiency, greater creativity, and a team that’s ready for whatever the future of work brings.
